Our Story
Abajenya! (Welcome!) Bwindi Education Project was created after founder Jacqueline Morris was on Safari in September 2018. After a day of hiking to see the famous silver back gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park the Rushaga Nsongi Orphanage Farm visited her hotel to do a performance of dancing and singing. Jacki met Gift, the eldest of the family and they were immediately connected.
Upon returning to Miami Gift continued to stay on Jacki‘s mind and she asked her safari guide Xavier for more information about him as she wanted to help with his education. It turns out that Gift was not alone. He had two brothers; Bruce and Ivan as well as two sisters; Viola and Petra. Suddenly the project grew in size and importance.
We are committed to fundraising for the care, education and general welfare of the children. Currently they are in rolled at the Bishop Asili Memorial School in Kabale Uganda.
The school year runs from February through November and is full-time boarding school about 85 km from Rushaga, where the children live with caretakers when the school is not in session. A local family has agreed to take care of the children during the break so they do not have to return to the orphanage. The caregivers have three rules when they agreed to take the children in; One. Be kind
Two. Help with the garden
Three. Love God
We are very lucky and thankful for them as well as our local liaison Xavier. He was Jacki’s safari guide that continues to help with the children. He communicates with the caregivers and school as well as shops for the school supplies and general needs.
